Chapter Thirteen

Delarin III: Jeremiah and Ruby’s House

"YOU HAVE TWO CRACKED ribs and a concussion. The muscles, ligaments and tendons were severely strained when your shoulder was dislocated but you got lucky there since there are no tears. The burns on your legs should heal cleanly as well. Now, young lady, you need to take it easy for the next few weeks. If you don't, you could risk hurting yourself worse than you are now. Am I making myself clear?"

"Yes, Doc. I get it. Stay put and don't do much."

"I'd prefer it if you didn't do anything but I know you can't do that. Just be very careful, OK, Alex?"

"I already said yes, Doc."

The doctor gathered his equipment and left the room. Jeremiah followed him out. Eli could hear them speaking softly in the next room. Alex settled herself a bit more and closed her eyes. She seemed to be more comfortable than before despite the addition of a couple of bandages, a sling and darkening bruises across her face. Ruby turned around and studied Eli. When he'd had about all he could handle of her silent examination, he turned to leave the room again.

"Wait. Please don't leave yet, young man," Ruby asked.

He turned back to face her. "I know. I screwed up. You don't have to continue to remind me of it. I plan on staying around just long enough to make sure she's safe and then I'm gone. You won't ever see me again."

"I wasn't trying to judge you or condemn you. I was reading you. I must ask for your forgiveness. Twice now I've read you without your permission. But, please believe me, I have had good reason to do so on both occasions."

"My forgiveness? I don't get it. It should be the other way around. Alex was abducted, beaten and damn near killed because of me. I should be the one apologizing."

"You have, though it wasn't necessary as you have not done anything for which to apologize. However, in this situation, I am clearly the one in the wrong. It is unethical for an empath to read someone without permission. I knew that and chose to do it anyways. I have good reason, but it still doesn't make it right. This is why I apologize to you. While I do not deny that much of this would not have happened had you not been here, the fact that you were saved Alexandra's life. Your presence here may have changed things, but it was a matter of time before someone came after her. After all, isn’t that what you were sent to do? Alexandra knew the risks when she chose to help you. She's been living under the threat of death most of her life now. So, you see, you are not to blame for these events, not entirely."

"I don't know that I agree with everything you said but, as far as the whole reading thing goes, it's fine. What are you looking for when you're reading me?"

"I needed to know if what has happened these last few days has changed you.
